How long does it take to get rid of alcohol?

Small beers (25 cl, 5%) drunk at once on an empty stomach by someone who drinks 1 to 3 times a month: estimates from the same calculation as the tool above.

Small beersMan 75 kg: peakBack to 0Woman 60 kg: peakBack to 0

    6 1.07 g/L9h 43 1.60 g/L18h 09

Example: after 3 small beers, a 75 kg man reaches about 0.51 g/L and is back to 0 after 4h 49.

    How does it work?

The calculator uses the app’s algorithm. Each drink is absorbed gradually (over 30 minutes on an empty stomach, 1h30 after a meal). The alcohol present is eliminated at 0.085 to 0.15 g/L per hour depending on your gender and habits. The level follows the Widmark formula: alcohol divided by your weight multiplied by 0.7 for men or 0.6 for women.

    Drink-driving limits

The limit is 0.5 g/L of blood in France, Germany, Spain, Belgium or Switzerland, and 0.8 g/L in the United Kingdom, the United States or Canada. It is lower for new drivers. The only truly safe level for driving is zero.

    FAQ

How long does it take to eliminate one drink?
The body eliminates on average 0.085 to 0.15 g/L of alcohol per hour, depending on gender and habits. According to DrinkMap’s calculation, a small beer on an empty stomach takes a 75 kg man to about 0.14 g/L, back to 0 after around 1h30. For a 60 kg woman, expect about 0.23 g/L and almost 3 hours.
Does drinking water or coffee lower blood alcohol?
No. Water, coffee, a shower or exercise do not speed up the elimination of alcohol: only time lowers the level. Drinking water does help limit dehydration.
    Does eating lower blood alcohol?
Eating slows down the passage of alcohol into the blood: the peak comes later and is less sharp. But the alcohol you drank is still absorbed in the end, and only time eliminates it.
Why do women have a higher level for the same drink?
On average, women’s bodies contain less water, in which alcohol is diluted. For the same amount drunk and the same weight, the blood alcohol level is therefore higher.
    Is this calculator reliable?
It is an estimate: metabolism, health or medication change the result. Only an approved breathalyser measures your actual level.

In DrinkMap, your drinks are logged with the place and time: the gauge updates by itself and tells you when you will be back to zero.
